Science fiction movies and films have been around since the late 1800s, and they continue to be one of the most popular genres in Hollywood today. Some of the earliest science fiction movies were made in France and Japan, and they often featured short stories or novellas as their source material. 1. The Terminator (1984)

2. Blade Runner (1982)
This science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott is based on Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electronic Sheep? and stars Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, a former police officer tasked with retiring rogue replicants living on Earth illegally. He falls in love with one such “replie” named Rachael (Sean Young) who reminds him of his ex-wife.
3. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Directed by Stanley Kubrick and featuring a stellar cast including Keir Dullea, William Sylvester, Daniel Richter and Leonard Rossiter, this science fiction film is based on Arthur C Clarke’s novel The Sentinel. It follows the story of astronauts David Bowman (Dullea), Frank Poole (Sylvester), Dr Heywood Floyd (Richter) as they travel to Jupiter in order to investigate an alien monolith discovered there. They are accompanied by HAL 9000 computer that seems intent on killing them all! 4. Alien (1979)
Directed by Ridley Scott and starring Sigourney Weaver, this science fiction movie is about a group of astronauts who respond to an SOS signal from another planet’s surface. They land on that planet only to discover it is inhabited by deadly aliens who want nothing more than eat humans for dinner… or breakfast! The film was nominated for Best Actress in Supporting Role at Oscars but didn’t win any awards because none were given out during those years due to strikes taking place within Hollywood at time . It did however gain cult status amongst sci-fi fans everywhere thanks largely due its terrifying creatures known as xenomorphs which kill off most crew members before end credits roll. 8. Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)
Directed by Robert Wise and based on Gene Roddenberry’s television series of the same name, science fiction movie follows crew of USS Enterprise as they investigate an alien vessel that has entered Earth’s orbit. 9. Bright (2017)
Directed by David Ayer as a Netflix original, the story tells of a pair of LA cops taking down a criminal organization. Only this time, in an alternate universe where Humans, Elves, Orcs, Wizards, and other mythical races live in somewhat Americanized harmony. The movie is lauded as a spiritual adaptation of the Shadowrun universe.
10. Jurassic Park (1993)
Directed by Steven Spielberg and based on the novel of same name by Michael Crichton science fiction movie follows group scientists who are invited to an island theme park populated with genetically engineered dinosaurs. However when power goes out during their visit things go awry and they must fight for survival against prehistoric beasts run amok! 12. Arrival (2016)
Directed by Denis Villeneuve science fiction film is about linguist Louise Banks who must learn an alien language in order to communicate with extraterrestrial beings that have arrived Earth. 13. Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

When young man from upper class falls in love with girl from lower class he chooses between living a life of luxury or helping her people overthrow their oppressive rulers. The story follows one man who believes himself to be the last living human on Earth-and he’s right! The movie also features plenty of nods to classic Star Trek episodes and moments, making it a must-see for fans of the franchise.

60. Dune (1984)
Dune is a science fiction film directed by David Lynch, based on the 1965 Frank Herbert novel of the same name. The plot revolves around Paul Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan), whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. While the planet is an inhospitable and sparsely populated wasteland ravaged by sandstorms, it is the only source of melange, or “the spice”, a drug that extends life and enhances mental abilities. As melange can only be produced on Arrakis, control of the planet is a coveted and dangerous undertaking. Timecop is science fiction movie directed by Peter Hyams and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Max Walker, a police officer who can travel through time. The film was released on September 16, 1994 and grossed over $78 million worldwide.
62. Dune (2021)
The science fiction film stars an ensemble cast including Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin and Dave Bautista. Dune 2021 is a remake and a reimagining of the original story of Dune, doing away with the 1984 film’s goofiness, Dune 2021 hits a note that just makes you grin from beginning to end of the movie.
In the novel, Dune is a desert planet that has been ruled for centuries by House Harkonnen and its Padishah Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV, however in the film, it is implied to be one of several planets controlled by them. The film will also feature an expedition sent across a desert on Arrakis to take control of the planet from the Harkonnens.
63. The Maze Runner (2014)
Based on the 2009 novel of the same name by James Dashner, The Maze Runner is a science fiction action film directed by Wes Ball and starring Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Will Poulter and Patricia Clarkson. The film was released on September 19, 2014 in the United States by 20th Century Fox.
The film tells the story of a group of boys who are trapped in a maze and trying to find a way out. O’Brien stars as Thomas, the protagonist who is initially introduced as having amnesia and does not know how he got into the maze or why he was brought there. The Maze Runner received mixed reviews from critics but grossed $348.0 million worldwide against its $34 million budget, making it a box office success.

A team of commandos on a mission in a Central American jungle find themselves hunted by an extraterrestrial warrior.
One by one, the men meet gruesome fates as the creature rips its way toward ultimate victory. Arnold Schwarzenegger leads his troops into battle against the alien hunter, who can make itself invisible and has razor-sharp teeth and claws.
